This three-sided adventure by Sierra On-Line has double hi-res graphics and requires 128K.  It is played with either the keyboard alone or a combination of a joystick and the keyboard.  Instead of typing directional commands such as East, South, etc., you move Sir Graham with either the joystick or the arrow keys in the direction you want him to go.  Because of this, a step-by-step solution is difficult to write.  The statements written in lower case indicate actions or movements to be made with either the keyboard or the joystick.  The statements written in CAPS (but not those in parentheses) indicate commands to be typed in from the keyboard.  To see your inventory and score at any time, just press the TAB key.                             
   
Finally, it should be noted that the solution to King's Quest is not unique.  Different actions taken by the player and objects taken into inventory are worth different amounts of points toward your score.

go east 1 scene and then north 3 scenes till you reach the entrance to the witch's house.  Along the way, you may meet a witch flying on a broomstick.  Avoid her by going south and then north again. 
OPEN DOOR
enter the house.  If the witch is there, she will come after you so leave immediately and then reenter.  When the witch is not there, go into the bedroom and wait there; she will appear soon and say she is going to bake some cookies. She will go to the oven.  Go behind her and push her into the fire.  Don't wait too long to do this or she will once again come after you and throw you behind the bars.
Now go into the bedroom and go to the night table

approach the goat (you may have to go 1 scene west to find him) and
SHOW CARROT (the goat will then follow you)
go out the gate, south 1 scene, west 1 scene, and south 2 scenes.
as you approach the bridge, an ugly troll tries to stop the both of you.  the goat butts the troll off the bridge never to be seen again (the goat also leaves you)
cross the bridge and in the next scene you will meet an old gnome.
TALK TO GNOME (he gives you three chances to guess his name).
His true name is Rumplestiltskin.  However, he is looking for an encoded version of his true name.  So type in 
IFNKOVHGROGHPRM which is Rumplestiltskin spelled in a reverse alphabet, that is, A becomes Z, B becomes Y, C becomes X etc.  If you do this he will give you some beans. Then 
TAKE BEANS
if you don't guess correctly, he will give you a gold key instead.  Then
TAKE KEY
go east 3 scenes and north 1 scene to the woodcutter's house.
enter the house and
FILL (the bowl fills with stew)
GIVE BOWL
go to the fiddle (watch out for the holes in the floor else you will fall in and die) and
TAKE FIDDLE
leave the house.
If you got the beans from the gnome then go south 1 scene and west 1 scene to the flowers.
PLANT BEANS
approach the beanstalk and
CLIMB BEANSTALK
climb all the way to the top (several changes of scene).  This is quite difficult to do so save your game before trying it.
If instead you got the golden key from the gnome, then (from the woodcutter's house) go south three scenes and east 2 scenes to the cave door.
UNLOCK DOOR
OPEN DOOR
enter the cave, climb all the way up the stairs (4 scene changes) and out the cave. You may meet a dwarf on the way up who tries to take your treasures. so save the game before you do this. 
go west 1 scene and meet the giant.
keep away from him (try hiding behind a tree) until he takes his nap.  This may take a few minutes.  then
TAKE CHEST (you now have one of the three items to return to the king)
go east 1 scene, enter the cave, climb down the stairs, and exit the cave.
go west 2 scenes, and south 1 scene to the well.
CUT ROPE
LOWER ROPE
CLIMB ROPE
go down the rope.  when you fall off the end of the rope into the water, type
DIVE
when you get to the bottom of the water, swim through the hole to the west and meet the dragon. Go close enough to him to be just out of range of his fire.
THROW WATER (this extinguishes the dragon's fire - he is embarassed and leaves moving a huge boulder on the way out)
alternately, you can defeat the dragon by typing
KILL DRAGON
THROW DAGGER
this solution results in fewer points.
move up to the right of the boulder and type
LOOK CAVE
TAKE MIRROR (you now have two of the three items to return to the king)
go west two scenes; you see a friendly bird in the sky.  go to the bottom of the screen and wait for the bird to fly west to east past you.  then
JUMP.  Keep trying this as the bird flies over your head until he picks you up and flies you to a scene with a hole in the ground.  he will then drop you there.
go west 1 scene to the mushroom.
TAKE MUSHROOM
go back east 1 scene to the hole.  march into the hole.  after you hit bottom, go south 1 scene and west 1 scene to the rat.  don't get too close to him or he will bite and kill you. 
GIVE CHEESE (the rat takes it and scrambles to the wall)
approach the door and
OPEN DOOR
go through the door.  you meet a leprechaun who leaves you alone because you have the four-leaf clover.
PLAY FIDDLE (leprechauns love fiddle music - watch the fiddle dance in the air)
go south 1 scene to the king of leprechauns.  he will leave his throne and go up the stairs.  approach the throne and
TAKE SHIELD (you now have all three items to return to the king)
TAKE SCEPTRE (for more points)
go up the stairs to your west.  when you get to the top, go to the far west.  you are too large to fit through the hole.
EAT MUSHROOM (this shrinks you to the size of a mouse)
go west one scene.  after you exit, you will shortly be turned back to your original size.  go north 2 scenes and east 2 scenes to the castle door.
OPEN DOOR
go to the king and
BOW KING (King Edward steps down off the throne - compliments you for your success and proceeds to fall to the floor and die)
go up to the throne (THIS IS THE END OF THE GAME)
